The golden days of the BTCC are being brought back to life at Brands Hatch and Oulton Park this year, following the announcement from the HSCC that they are to launch a new Super Touring series for 2013.
The series will recreate the classic battles from the ultra-popular super touring days of the 1990s, following the success of a similar event at last year's Silverstone Classic, which attracted 40 cars.
Races will be held at Brands Hatch during the HSCC Superprix meeting on 13-14 July, and at Oulton Park during the Gold Cup event on 24-25 August.
Big name stars, including former champions John Cleland and Tim Harvey, have already expressed an interest in taking part in at least some of the rounds, with Cleland in particular looking get reunited with his famous machines.
"I'd be right up for doing it," he told Motorsport News. "It would be great to bring out some of the other old champions, and I'd love to drive any of the cars, not just the ones I drove in period. However I would have to drive a Vauxhall because that's what I spent my life doing. It would be wrong to arrive in a Hillman Imp or an Alfa Romeo or anything else."
Fellow champion Tim Harvey is equally enthusiastic. "It is fantastic to see the cars out and for a lot of people their favourite period is the mid-90s Super Touring era. It brings a lot of fond memories. If I get a chance to race in it, I'll be there."
Former BTCC competitor Patrick Watts is another to confirm his interest in the series, and has purchased two ex-works Peugeot machines to race in 2013. "I'm very excited" he told AUTOSPORT. "The cars are immaculate and we have enough parts to build a third car."
Several cars from the Super Touring era competed at Silverstone and are expected to race this season, including several Ford Mondeos, Vauxhall Cavaliers and Nissan Primeras, as well as a Vauxhall Vectra, the revolutionary four-wheel drive Audi A4 and a Honda Accord.
