Mat Jackson eyes a BTCC race win at Brands Hatch

Thursday, October 03 2013

Mat Jackson aims to sign off his 2013 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship campaign with a win next weekend (12/13 October) at Brands Hatch, his Airwaves Racing team's home circuit.

This season has been a disappointing one for the Wrotham-based squad, which had expected to fight for the title. However the second half of the year has been much stronger, and several podium finishes for both Mat and team mate Aron Smith have followed.

"The first half didn't get off to how we'd planned," Mat admitted. "We did a lot of development over the winter and we thought that we were in a good place, but clearly the results hadn't been what we planned. We re-evaluated how the car is as the season has gone on and from the mid-season break we managed to get a two-day test in at Snetterton, which improved the car and put us back in the ballpark of where we need to be. Being back towards the front and fighting for podiums is a lot better place to be."

The middle of the season also saw the appearance of a third car, which for the last three rounds is being driven by experienced race winner Tom Onslow-Cole. Mat has welcomed this development: "Having the third car is great, and somebody of the calibre of Tom driving it is a great asset to the team. It's certainly helped the team move forward with the car and hopefully when we get to Brands Hatch we can be challenging for the wins.

"There are two quick guys alongside me, and we've moving forward with the car. I don't know what the plans are for 2014 but I think we're certainly making progress with the car and hopefully challenge again for the championship next year."

This has filled Mat with confidence and he heads to Brands Hatch ready to give his team cause for celebration: "I think we've had two good weekends on the bounce now; and hopefully we can go to Brands, it's the home circuit for the team, and we can bring some more silverware home. And for myself, get that elusive first win of 2013."
