Aron Smith: "Brands GP is by far my favourite circuit on the calendar"

Wednesday, October 02 2013

Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship driver Aron Smith can't wait to race on the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit next weekend (12/13 October), returning to the scene of his maiden race win last year.

Aron heads to Brands Hatch on the back of a strong second half to Airwaves Racing's season. This included a storming performance at Silverstone last weekend, in which he twice stood on the podium. "I think the second half in particular has been really strong for Airwaves Racing," he said. "When you really look at the stats, the second half has been the tracks that our NGTC car got to revisit, as both Mat and myself were in the S2000 car at the beginning of the year last year. So I think that was the main turning point for us just to have a backlog of data to work from, and that's probably why we've been able to challenge at the front at the majority of the rounds."

Aron's performances have also seen him finish ahead of senior team member Mat Jackson. In the title standings he is just 15 points behind Mat in ninth place as they head into the final round. Aron acknowledges the significance of this: "When I first came in last year, Mat Jackson was a superstar in my eyes. I was struggling to be at his coat-tails, so to speak, so to even be on par and able to sneakily beat him now and again, is something I'm really proud of. Mat is one of the biggest names in the championship, so I think you have to pick yourself up against the likes of him to see what you're really made of."

He has a good chance of finishing ahead of Mat too, for the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit is one that he is looking forward to racing on. "I can't wait," he enthused. "The GP track is by far my favourite circuit on the calendar. It's one of those tracks I think that every driver really loves because of silly little things like there's not much testing there, so you rock up at the race weekend and it's all new, and every time you go out on the track you learn something new each time.

"I absolutely love it around there, and to return to the track where I got my maiden victory is always going to be pretty special, so on the back of Silverstone I think we have a car that is capable of challenging at the front. I think you can consider it as close to home for me as possible. I've spent a lot of time around the Motorbase workshop, and it's just a stone's throw away."
