Alex Zanardi crowned best athlete of the Paralympic Games

Thursday, October 04 2012

Alex Zanardi has been voted the International Paralympic Committee's (IPC) Male Athlete of the Month for August and September 2012, covering the period in which the Paralympic Games were held.

Zanardi claimed two gold medals and a silver in three of the most inspiring performances ever seen at Brands Hatch when it hosted the Paralympic Games Road Cycling in early September. His success came 21 years after making his Brands Hatch debut in an F3000 car, and three years after last competing here in the World Touring Car Championship.

The Italian former-F1 driver's achievements at Brands were met by a huge wave of media coverage with national newspapers, specialist magazines, TV and radio all featuring his story prominently. An hour long show 'The Amazing Alex Zanardi' was broadcast by BBC Radio 5 Live last week and can be heard here.

"I'm excited and moved by the affection and the esteem that so many people have shown me and continue to do so" said Zanardi, after 30,000 people voted for him on the IPC website.

"I thank all the people who voted for me and continue to show me affection. In addition to making me feel flattered, this is an important outcome for the Paralympic movement. Lots of people felt involved (in the poll) and part of the cause for a Paralympic athlete and this is really wonderful."
