10 things to look forward to in 2016

Friday, January 01 2016

Happy New Year from all of us at MSV! The new season isn't far away, so we've picked out ten things to look forward to, which will make 2016 a year to remember.

1. MGJ Engineering Brands Hatch Winter Stages - Sunday 31 January

There isn't long to wait until the season gets underway - in just three weeks' time we'll be getting set for the welcome return of the MGJ Engineering Brands Hatch Winter Stages. It's part of the new Motorsport News Circuit Rally Championship that got underway last November at Oulton Park, and the result is a fantastic entry of cars ranging from sideways Ford Escorts to four-wheel-drive Subarus and everything in between! A range of stages will use parts of the circuit, access roads, pits and paddock plus the dedicated rally stage - if you've never seen rallying at Brands Hatch now is the perfect time.

2. Blancpain GT Sprint Series, Brands Hatch - Saturday 7 May-Sunday 8 May

The spectacular Blancpain GT Series returns to Kent in May, and the two previous events were characterised by the stunning sight and sound of the world's best supercars and fantastic weather. Many of the cars are driven by the best GT and sportscar drivers in the business; last year's victor Laurens Vanthoor is surely a future Le Mans winner. Two rounds of Blancpain Sprint action on main raceday Sunday, a full support bill and a mouth-watering supercar display makes this one of the must-see events of 2016.

3. Masters Historic Festival, Brands Hatch - Saturday 28-Sunday 29 May

The late May Bank Holiday weekend is a popular fixture for fans of classic cars, and this year's event should be even more special. Brands Hatch celebrates its 90th birthday in 2016 and what better way to celebrate than by watching historic Grand Prix cars in action, plus further entertainment from sportscars, GTs, single-seaters and the every-popular saloons.

4. British GT and BRDC F4 Championships, Oulton Park - Saturday 28/Monday 30 May

An alternative fixture for the Bank Holiday weekend is the British GT and BRDC F4 round at Oulton Park. However if you fancy a road trip you could spend Sunday in Kent and Monday watching the thunderous supercars and the all-new, faster Tatuus-Cosworth F4 cars at one of the country's most challenging circuits. There's plenty of pit-lane drama to look forward to in the two GT races, and the F4 pack is set to contain the most exciting new talents in the sport.

5. Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship, Oulton Park - Saturday 4-Sunday 5 June

Following the GT/F4 weekender, why not stay in Cheshire for the biggest event in the BTCC calendar? The huge crowd revels in the party atmosphere at this early summer event, with many camping at the venue to enjoy a festival of motorsport. The three BTCC races always provides something to talk about, and a packed programme of support races ensures a breathless day of entertainment.

6. American SpeedFest IV, Brands Hatch - Saturday 11-Sunday 12 June

If you've not attended the last three American SpeedFests (and many of you did), you're missing one of the best events of the season. Not only does this event include the sole NASCAR-sanctioned race in the UK - the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series - plus a host of US-style races, but the track action is just part of the cornucopia of entertainment on offer. For example, last year's event featured star appearances from Lightning McQueen and Tow Mater from Disney's Cars, vehicles from Transformers, a huge American car display, a re-enactment of the famous DeLorean chase scene from Back to the Future, a Miss SpeedFest beauty pageant, US-themed food, music and much more. Best of all, this year's will be even bigger and better. Need another reason? 7. Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship, Snetterton 300  - Saturday 30-Sunday 31 July

Norfolk in the middle of summer for Snetterton's annual BTCC round is traditionally a fine place to be, and with superb views of the action from the venue's panoramic spectator banks, it's a great way to watch the bumping and barging that the BTCC is renowned for. It's also the first round after the summer break, and with anticipation at fever pitch after a month away, the atmosphere will be electric! Recent years have also thrown up a few surprises such as Jack Goff's maiden win last season, Jason Plato's dramatic roll in 2014 and the debut of Motorbase's NGTC Ford Focus.

8. MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship, Brands Hatch - Friday 5-Sunday 7 August

Superbike racing at Brands Hatch in the summer is a must for lovers of fast bikes and racing, and the mid-season Kent fixture always has a carnival atmosphere. Many fans turn up on the Thursday before the action, and set up in the huge campsite, which rocks to live music on Saturday night. The track entertainment builds to a crescendo on Sunday, when the BSB riders battle for honours on the famous Grand Prix circuit. If you can't make this one, make sure you get to the Final Showdown in October.

9. MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship, Cadwell Park - Saturday 27-Monday 29 August

Another summer MCE BSB round, but the Cadwell Park event is a firm favourite with fans, many of whom plan their trip months in advance. Whether it's the challenge of the twisty Lincolnshire circuit, the picturesque setting, or the chance to see their heroes leap into the air at the fearsome Mountain, the motorcycle fraternity loves this event. They'll have even more reason to this year, as it returns to its popular August Bank Holiday slot, making for three days of high-octane entertainment.

10. British Truck Racing Championship, Brands Hatch - Saturday 26-Monday 28 March & Saturday 5/Sunday 6 November

We've cheated slightly with this one, but we're sure you'll forgive us. We couldn't decide which one of the two Brands Hatch Truck Racing dates to go for, because they both fall on big weekends. The opening fixture takes place over Easter weekend, so there will be plenty of seasonal entertainment on offer for all ages - Truck Racing is a family event, with as much to do off-track as to see on it, and the 1,000 horsepower leviathans are certainly a sight to behold! November's date coincides with Bonfire Night and we'll have another of our spectacular fireworks displays to enjoy once racing is over. As we can't decide, perhaps you should schedule both events in your diaries?
