The top ten MSV news stories of 2015

Wednesday, December 23 2015

It's been another busy year for MSV, with plenty to talk about! These are the ten most-read stories across our websites in 2015.

1. MSV acquires former airbase in France for European expansion

Our biggest story of 2015 is from November, when MSV Chief Executive Jonathan Palmer completed a deal to purchase a former military airbase in France, with a view to developing the site into a major international motorsports complex, Laon Autodrome. Located within a couple of hours of Calais, and close to Germany, Belgium and Switzerland, it's not surprising that the news proved to be popular with fans of motor racing and trackdays alike.

2. Turkington and Plato join forces at BTCC super team

It was the big story of last winter; reigning BTCC champion Colin Turkington would not be defending his title with WSR and runner-up Jason Plato had left MG. Many had suspected that Plato would join promising upstarts Team BMR, but when he was announced together with rival Turkington, BMR boss Warren Scott had pulled off a major coup. After the dust had settled, speculation turned to who would prevail out of the two. After their first season together the jury is still out; Plato has had the more successful season but many suspect that Turkington has yet to show his hand...

3. Legend Agostini to headline new International Classic at Cadwell

July's Cadwell Park International Classic historic bike racing event was announced in style with the news that a star line-up would be headlined by 15-time World Champion Giacomo Agostini. The Italian legend would eventually be joined by former rival Phil Read, Jim Redman, Sammy Miller, John Reynolds, Jamie Whitman, James Haydon, Steve Plater, Derek Chatterton, John Cooper and many more as the Lincolnshire circuit revelled in a weekend celebrating past glories.

4. Justin Wilson obituary: 1978-2015

2015 was a year tinged with sadness for the MSV family. In August, inaugural Formula Palmer Audi champion and former F1 driver Justin Wilson died after hitting debris in the penultimate IndyCar race of the season at Pocono. It was the cruellest of luck for the popular Yorkshireman, whose IndyCar career finally looked to be on the up after holding out for a drive at Andretti Autosports. Jonathan Palmer, who managed Justin's career and masterminded his F1 debut with an innovative share offer, paid tribute with this touching obituary.

5. Former BTCC champ Jordan switches to MG

The BTCC driver merry-go-round was kicked off in January when 2013 champion Andrew Jordan announced that he would be leaving the family-run Eurotech operation to drive for MG. The Jordan family had sold their squad to Jeff Smith and Andrew looked forward to concentrating more on driving than the behind-the-scenes work he'd done before. However by the end of the year he'd severed his links with Triple Eight-run MG to join front-running team Motorbase.

6. Married couple swap the school run for racing trucks!

One of the year's more unusual stories proved to be one of the most popular. British Truck racer Wayne Eason was joined by wife Joanne for the 2015 season and everyone was fascinated to see how the couple would get on as team-mates, not least their four children! Both have race experience, and Wayne's WDE team also fields cars in several championships. Their season together ended in unfortunate style in the summer when they collided on track in a rain-affected race, leaving two badly-damaged trucks and a few broken bones for Joanne. The pair promise to be back soon, so fingers crossed that they return to Brands Hatch for Easter!

7. Free summer Snetterton MCE BSB taster this May

Even during an unseasonably mild December it's nice to remember the warmth of late spring and early summer, and what can be better than spending a sunny day watching British Superbikes at Snetterton? Many of you agreed, and an early chance to catch the riders in action ahead of their annual Norfolk round was a popular story from earlier in the year.

8. Mark Webber enjoys track debut at Cadwell Park

The former Grand Prix driver and soon-to-be World Endurance Champion paid a visit to the Lincolnshire circuit to film for Red Bull and Porsche, and he was impressed by what he saw. Whether it was enthusing about fellow Aussie Josh Brookes or recalling his days in Formula Ford, the popular antipodean had plenty to say on his visit.

9. 2016 season passes for all MSV circuits now available to order

The year is nearly over, but clearly many of you are already thinking about 2016, and with good reason as there's plenty to look forward to. Our range of season passes went on sale in October and at special prices if ordered before Christmas, they've proven to be hugely popular. They're still on sale - click on the headline for this story to order yours now!

10. 2016 MCE British Superbike Championship calendar announced

One of the most anticipated of 2016's forthcoming events is the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship, especially with many exciting rider announcements. The season calendar was confirmed shortly before the 2015 title-decider, and moments later many of you rushed to fill your diaries. Best news of all being the return of the Cadwell Park event to the August Bank Holiday weekend!
